Florianópolis, often referred to as Floripa, is the capital city of the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. One of the most striking features of Florianópolis is its extensive coastline, which has over 40 beaches ranging from secluded coves to bustling urban stretches. 

In addition to its beaches, Florianópolis is also known for its rich colonial history, reflected in its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks. The city’s downtown area, known as the Centro, features beautiful colonial buildings, churches, and squares, including the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Public Market.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to explore in Florianópolis, beyond its beaches. The island is home to lush forests, rolling hills, and scenic viewpoints, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and outdoor adventures.

When To Go

The summer season is December to March with warm and humid conditions perfect for enjoying the beaches. For the best surf conditions, consider visiting during the winter months between June to September.

Best Beaches

Lagoinha do Leste

Lagoinha do Leste is a breathtakingly beautiful beach located on the southeastern coast of the island. What sets it apart from other beaches is its pristine and relatively untouched natural beauty, as well as how secluded it is. 

Access to Lagoinha do Leste is not as straightforward as some other beaches on the island. Visitors typically reach the beach via hiking trails that wind through the lush Atlantic Forest. The hike can take 1-2 hours, depending on the trail chosen and your pace, but the journey is part of the adventure and adds to the allure of the beach.

The beach is backed by dense vegetation and cliffs, creating a serene and secluded environment that feels like a hidden paradise. 

Praia do Pantano do Sul

Located on the Southern coast of the island, Praia do Pantano do Sul is is surrounded by lush green hills and forests, adding to its scenic charm. The waters of are generally calm and clear, making it a great place for swimming and snorkeling.

One of the highlights of this beach is its authentic fishing village atmosphere. You can observe local fishermen bringing in their daily catch or explore the village to experience the laid-back lifestyle of the residents. There are also several seafood restaurants along the shoreline where visitors can enjoy fresh and delicious seafood dishes, including traditional Brazilian cuisine.

Campeche Beach

It’s popular among surfers due to its consistent waves, which are good for both beginners and experienced surfers alike. The beach also offers opportunities for other water sports such as kiteboarding and windsurfing, thanks to its steady winds and open waters.

Praia Mole 

The beach has a long stretch of soft white sand flanked by turquoise waters and backed by lush green hillsides, creating a picturesque setting. Praia Mole is surrounded by natural vegetation and Atlantic Forest, adding to its scenic charm and providing opportunities for nature walks and exploration.

One of the main draws of Praia Mole is its consistent waves, which attract surfers from around the world. The beach has excellent conditions for surfing, with waves suitable for all skill levels. In addition to surfing, visitors can also enjoy other water sports such as bodyboarding and stand-up paddleboarding.

Praia Mole has a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, particularly during the summer months when it becomes a hub of activity. The beach is lined with bars, restaurants, and beach clubs where visitors can relax, enjoy refreshing drinks, and savor delicious Brazilian cuisine.

Best Towns to Visit

Santo Antônio de Lisboa

Santo Antônio de Lisboa is a charming district known for its rich colonial heritage, cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and picturesque waterfront. It was founded by Azorean immigrants in the 18th century, and its colonial roots are still evident in its well-preserved buildings and churches. 

One of the highlights of Santo Antônio de Lisboa is its waterfront area, which offers stunning views of the sea and nearby islands. You can stroll along the promenade, dine at seafood restaurants serving fresh and delicious cuisine, or relax at one of the seaside cafes while enjoying the scenic surroundings.

The district is also known for its traditional festivals and cultural events, including the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo, which celebrates Azorean culture and traditions with music, dance, and food.

Ribeirão da Ilha  

Ribeirão da Ilha is a district located on the southern tip of the island about a 45 minute drive from Florianopolis. It’s known for its oyster production, in fact over 50 of the Brazilian oyster varieties are cultivated there. 

Founded in the early 16th century, Ribeirão da Ilha is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Santa Catarina. It was originally established by Portuguese colonizers and later became a hub for Azorean immigrants, who left a lasting cultural and architectural influence on the area.

One of the main attractions of Ribeirão da Ilha is its charming colonial-style buildings, many of which date back several centuries. The district’s cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and traditional architecture create a captivating ambiance that transports you back in time.

The waterfront area of Ribeirão da Ilha is particularly scenic, with panoramic views of the sea, surrounding islands, and traditional fishing boats known as “jangadas.” The town has lots of seafood restaurants, which serve delicious dishes made from locally caught fish and shellfish.

Ribeirão da Ilha also offers opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, birdwatching, and beachcombing. Nearby beaches like Praia do Ribeirão da Ilha and Praia da Tapera are popular spots for swimming, relaxing, and water sports.

Best Hikes

Lagoinha do Leste

This is one of the most iconic hikes on the island. The trail starts from Praia do Matadeiro or Praia do Pântano do Sul and takes around 1-2 hours, depending on your pace. The trail winds through lush Atlantic Forest, offering stunning views of the coastline and ending at the pristine Lagoinha do Leste Beach.

Trilha Costa da Lagoa

 This scenic trail starts from the village of Pântano do Sul and follows the shores of Lagoa da Conceição, one of Florianópolis’s largest lagoons. The trail passes through dense forest and offers beautiful views of the lagoon and surrounding hillsides. You can reach Costa da Lagoa, a traditional fishing village, by hiking or taking a boat ride.

Pedra Branca

For a more challenging hike, consider tackling Pedra Branca, the highest peak on the island. The trail starts from the village of Caiacanga and takes around 4-6 hours to reach the summit. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense forest, rocky terrain, and steep inclines. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Florianópolis and the surrounding coastline.
